Whitworth Women Tie Puget Sound, Remain Unbeaten

The Whitworth women continued their fantastic start to the Northwest Conference season, moving to 4-0-1 with a 2-2 draw against Puget Sound Saturday. The Pirate men, meanwhile, saw their struggles continue into week three of the campaign, falling to Willamette 3-1.

Leah Corra gave Whitworth the lead when she stole the ball as the Loggers attempted a switch along the back line, quickly scoring for the lead in the 26th minute. Three minutes into the second half, though, the Loggers tied it up. In the 65th Kelly Wucherer launched a shot from about 25 yards from the right side that snuck past the keeper as a Buc teammate dove to try to head it in. It looked like they had the win until local product Lura Morton (Moscow, ID) scored with just 22 seconds remaining in the match off a long ball sent hurriedly forward chasing an equalizer. The two went scoreless in overtime.

The reigning champs will need a lot of help to repeat as they now sit with just one win after five games (1-3-1). They outshot the visitors 16-9, but with only four on target, it was a rough afternoon. The visitors scored once in the first half and three minutes after the break - both on perfectly-placed long-distance shots - for a two-goal advantage They grabbed full command with a third in the 53rd. Moi Diaz finally got the Bucs on the board in the 80th, but it was too late for a rally.
