HS Daily - 9.21.17: NC stuns LC on GSL's Opening Day

Expected to be one of the contenders for the Greater Spokane League title, the Lewis & Clark Tigers suffered a setback Thursday afternoon against North Central that will force them to now be perfect the rest of the way in what is always a tight race for the league championship.

In a matchup of two title contenders, the Bullpups showed they will be a tough side to top as they put four on the board before Ferris answered in a two-goal victory. The rest of the league's slate went as expected.

Also, in a rare Wednesday GNL showdown, East Valley prevailed in a back-and-forth affair against rival West Valley. Both return to the pitch Thursday.

Greater Spokane League 


Lewis & Clark 0-1 OT North Central 
Heavy underdogs, North Central played well against the Tigers in a back-and-forth contest that was deadlocked at zeros and nearly went the full distance to a shootout. Goalkeeper Payton Flannery made several big saves in the game to keep the contest scoreless as North Central looked to capitalize on a chance for the upset. In the end, a yellow card played a key role for the winning goal. With Izzy Garcia temporarily sent off for her booking from kicking the ball away, inserted sub Kylee Devore scored within 20 seconds of entering the match, tallying on a ball from Jenna Janke following an LC turnover deep in their end. The goal came with just over a minute remaining in overtime.


Ferris 2-4 Gonzaga Prep
Chelsea Le put Prep in control with a goal and two assists in a four minute span for the Bullpups, scoring in the 17th and then setting up Angel Denke and Corynn Vigil in the 19th and 20th. Her freshman sister Kyah made it four in the second half before Yacine Bitibal and Jill Calkins put Ferris on the board.

Mt Spokane 1-3 University
The Wildcats got on the board first with a Payton Stiles strike seven minutes in, but Kelsey Crosby replied for the Titans in the 22nd. Peyton Bastine put U-High in front six minutes later and Crosby set up Sophia Orndorff for some insurance eight minutes into the second half.

Shadle Park 2-7 Mead
Olivia DeShazo scored back-to-back goals in the 13th and 15th minutes for an early Panther lead before Olivia Wicks answered for the Highlanders in the 16th. Hopes of pulling even were dashed with Katie Kuka and Kendal Houston scoring int he 21st and 23rd. Emilie Tangeman, though, scored in the 31st to make it a two-goal difference, but Gabbie Walters scored three minutes before the break for a three goal halftime lead. Megan Cardenas, who set up Walters, tallied in the 66th Sarah Frahm's second assist of the game and Walters scored her second two minutes later.

Central Valley 11-0 Rogers 
Kaylin LaBrosse scored the first of four goals on the day in the opening minute and then an own goal left the Pirates in a big hole after just four minutes. Anna Hilbert struck in the sixth and Kalle Crouch scored the first of two in the 13th on a ball from Kenzie Claypool, who went on to add a goal a minute later and then two more assists. Dori Ames had a goal and assist and the shutout was a shared effort from AJ Crooks and Jenna Lauer.

Great Northern League

East Valley 4-3 West Valley 
Chelsea Koker put the Eagles on the board first two minutes into the match, but the Knights had the lead at the break on a 10th minute equalizer from Chloe Gellhaus and a Kailee Hance-Brown goal in the 30th. Frankie Schade evened things back up four minutes after intermission, but Gracie Montoya answered immediately for the Knights a minute later and then added what proved to be the game-winner in the 54th with Koker setting up Madeline Liberg 10 minutes later for the hosts.
