Lower Division Updates 9.26.17: Whitworth Women Off to Hot Start


In their best start since 2012, the Whitworth women are on a roll in the Northwest Conference with four wins in as many games and a three-plus game shutout streak that goes back to their conference opener. This week they picked up a pair of 1-0 road wins at George Fox and Pacific.

Also picking up a pair of wins this week were the MSU-Billings men and the Eastern Oregon ladies. The Yellowjackets took a 3-2 thriller against Northwest Nazarene and topped Concordia 3-1. The Mountaineers were 2-1 winners against Northwest University and edged Evergreen 1-0.

Thursday, September 21

MSU-Billings 0-2 Concordia 
Defender McKenna Stocker (Spokane, WA) scored the opening goal for the Cavaliers from the top of the box in the 37th minute. The visitors added some insurance five into the second half.

Northwest Nazarene 2-0 Western Oregon
Defender Mabinty Kanu scored the opening goal in the 15th minute for the Crusaders from about 20 yards on a ball from Anita Maryskova. They added some insurance in the 81st when a corner created a second chance that saw Madi Taylor (Lewiston, ID / Treasure Valley CC) find Rikki Myers. Daniele Ortiz made two stops for the shutout.

Simon Fraser 0-4 Western Washington
Sophia Kallas (Boise, ID) set up the third goal for the Vikings.

Saint Martin's 1-4 Seattle Pacific 
Claire Neder (Spokane, WA) set up the third goal for the hosts.

Saturday, September 23

Northwest Nazarene 0-1 Seattle Pacific
A corner kick nodded home in the fourth minute of the second half was the difference.

Simon Fraser 4-2 Central Washington
Mackenzie Nolte scored the opener eight minute in on a ball from Whitney Lowe to put the Wildcats in front, but the Canadians rattled off three consecutive before Nolte found the back of the net again via Jordan Engman in the 66th.

MSU-Billings 1-1 Western Oregon
A free kick from Alexa Iacolucci in the 23rd minute found the head of Amanda Hemmen for the opening score to put the hosts in front. It looked like the Yellowjackets were gonna grab the win when the visitors scored with less than two minutes remaining.

Western Washington 6-1 Saint Martin's 
Defender Malia Maack (Spokane, WA) had a great night with a goal, the team's fifth, and a pair of assists in just 35 minutes played. Freshman Darby Doyle (Spokane, WA) also scored her first collegiate goal, tallying the team's fourth two minutes into the second half.

Thursday, September 21

Northwest Nazarene 2-3 MSU-Billings 
In a back-and-forth affair, the Yellowjackets came out on top when a deflection off a defender was collected by Guillaume Kremer and put away in the 65th minute for what held as the winner. Kremer had originally opened the scoring with the lone tally of the first half, a 25th minute penalty. Jake Levine (Spokane, WA) delivered a cross in the 52nd that Raphael Junquiera used to equalize only to see Eli Williams (Spokane, WA) put the hosts back in front a minute later. Levine tied things back up again in the 62nd with a great individual play, scoring one-on-one with the keeper after a long breakaway.

Concordia 1-3 MSU-Billings 
After falling behind in the fourth minute, Eli Williams tied things back up for the Yellowjackets when his cross two minutes later was volleyed in by Victor Sanchez from six yards. JD Hauenstein (Spokane, WA) scored with a header in the 22nd to put the hosts in front and Sanchez set up Realf Zhivanaj, who tallied an assist Thursday, in the 83rd for a clincher in the 83rd.

A 13th minute penalty converted by Katie Bischoff (Spokane, WA) held as the deciding tally with Molly Webster (CC Spokane) finishing with five saves.

Whitman 2-2 Pacific
Trailing by two since the 28th minute, the Blues rallied in the final 15 minutes. Renee van Bergeijk tapped in a rebound in the 76th and Jordan O'Roy got her boot on a loose ball in the box in the final minute to even the match up.

Sunday, September 24

Whitworth 1-0 Pacific
The shutout streak reached three-plus games (325 minutes) for the Pirates, this time with Sienna Tanner (Spokane, WA) in goal with two saves. A low cross from Shirley Chandler in the 52nd minute was tapped in by Leah Corra for the decisive tally.

Whitman 0-4 George Fox
Th Bruins ran away with the win with three goals in the second half.

Micah Weller (Cheney, WA) put the Pirates in front on the road, but the Lutes answered with an equalizer in the 62nd.

Sunday, September 24

Whitman 2-0 Pacific Lutheran
The Blues broke the stalemate in the second half with CJ Fritz (Bend, OR) nodding in a ball from Luca Barsher in the 52nd. Ben Freedman added some insurance via Sean Thomas in the 67th with Owen Davis-Bower making four stops for the shutout.

Whitworth 1-4 Puget Sound
The Pirates found themselves down early with the Loggers scoring int he fifth and 20th minutes. The hole grew to three in the 32nd before Jonah Snyder struck on a 20-yard free kick a minute later. UPS added their final goal in the second half.

Northwest Christian 2-3 Providence
The Argos were given the lead in the second minute on a failed clearance off the line, but they quickly scored one themselves to double the lead five minutes later when Sandralee Deville put Eme McLaughlin (Great Falls, MT) on a breakaway. Sydney Knieriem struck for an olympico in the 54th, curling her corner in at the near post for what proved to be the game-winner as the Beacons scored two in a rally attempt.

Northwest 1-2 Eastern Oregon
Stephanie Wilson (Kalispell, MT) found Sharaya Roberts (Spokane, WA) in the seventh minute to give the Eagles advantage throughout the first half, but the lead was short-lived in the second with Natalie Mitchell scoring a minute in via Taylor Boyer. Enna Roslander provided the Mountaineers with the winner in the 80th.

Corban 2-2 Carroll 
The Saints took the lead 20 minutes in when Talya Vaira (Great Falls, MT) scored off the rebound of a Madison Apsey (Boise, ID) shot. A fantastic cross from Payton Netz (Great Falls, MT) found Charly Clements in the 51st to double the lead, but it was not enough. Lexi McQueary (Kennewick, WA) scored in the 67th to spark a rally that saw the equalizer come in the 86th.

Rocky Mountain 1-0 College of Idaho 
Hannah Borgel broke a lengthy stalemate on a ball from Alexis Robbins in the 83rd minute for the Bears. Maia Wetzel (Billings, MT) needed just one save for the shutout.

Northwest Christian 1-2 Carroll 
Christiana Plank scored with two seconds left in the first half when Kirsten Girolami's free rebounded to her. The Beacons leveled in the 51st, but Friday's heroes scorers combined for the winner in the 66th with Charly Clements tallying on a corner from Talya Vaira.

Corban 2-0 Providence 
Lexi McQueary set up both goals for the Warriors as they tallied one in each half for the win.

Evergreen 0-1 Eastern Oregon
Yasmin Mookerdum scored the deciding goal in the 61st with Cydni Cottrell making five saves for the clean sheet.

Tuesday, September 19

Eastern Oregon 3-0 Walla Walla 
Julian Wells scored the lone goal of the first half despite 20 shots from EOU. Micah Hill doubled the lead in the 58th and Aldo Rivas, who set up the opener, fed Fredy Rodriguez (Columbia Basin College) with a through ball in the 72nd for the final tally. Aiden Wright and Alex Mitchell combined for the shutout.

Friday, September 22

Walla Walla 0-6 Oregon Tech
Defender Kelly Kyllo (Spokane, WA) scored the first two goals, the first 13 minutes in and the second via Brennan Gazdik (Boise, ID) in the 24th. Gazdik set up the third in the 32nd and Kyllo created the fifth in the 60th.

Northwest Christian 2-0 Providence
The Beacons got their first in the 29th and added a second via a penalty in the 90th.

Northwest 1-1 Eastern Oregon
Julian Wells scored the opener six minutes in for the hosts with the Eagles finding an answer in the 51st. NU lost two players to red cards in the 57th, but the Mountaineers were unable to take advantage.

#5 Corban 4-2 Carroll 
Rodrigo Portillo put the Saints in front eight minutes in with a well-placed shot, but the Warriors were in front by the break with a goal in the 27th followed by a free kick rebound put away by Nathaniel Cheney (Clarkston, WA) in the 44th. Jose Porras converted a penalty to tie it up for Carroll in the 57th, but two minutes later a penalty put Corban back in front at the other end. Cheney scored a second with a header in the 81st to provide some insurance.

Evergreen 1-0 Warner Pacific 
Martin Ramirez (Pasco, WA / Walla Walla CC) set up the game-winner six minutes into overtime with a looping cross.

Rocky Mountain 3-2 OT College of Idaho
Sky Swenson scored the lone goal of the first half for the Bears in the fifth minute. That stood as the difference between the two until a wild final 15 minutes. Jace Beck doubled the lead in the 75th and then Ben Bechor scored two goals back-to-back in the 83rd and 87th to pull even, the first via Carter Perry and the second from Bekir Cinac. In overtime Jonah Gronmayer scored the winner for the Bears in the 105th.

#5 Corban 3-2 Providence
After giving up a second minute goal to the ranked Warriors, the Argos answered with two from Christoffer Bisbo to take the lead into the break. He nodded the first home in the 24th and got the second with 13 seconds left with a shot that caromed off a defender. Corban, though, scored twice in the second half for the win.

Northwest Christian 1-0 Carroll
The visitors only had two shots on goal, but the one was all they needed as they got the winner in the 59th.

Evergreen 3-1 Eastern Oregon
Tino Pantaleon (Wenatchee, WA) set up Evergreen's opener in the third minute, but the Mountaineers answered just three minutes later through Julian Wells, who tallied in the third consecutive game. Martin Ramirez helped create the go-ahead goal in the 15th for the visitors, who locked up the win in the second half.

Multnomah 0-4 Oregon Tech
Brennan Gazdik scored the opening goal off a header from Kelly Kyllo in the fifth minute with the two reversing roles in the 56th on a goal from a through ball.

Kelly Gieber (Bend, OR) set up the second and third goals.

DII - Bailey Kroll (Meridian, ID) scored the second goal in Dixie State's 2-0 win against Biola... Megan Lowery (Hayden, ID / NIC) scored the opening goal and added an assist in Mary's 4-1 win at Minnesota Crookston with Caylin Cathey (Billings, MT) scoring the second... Ryann Rydeen (Spokane, WA) posted her third shutout in as many starts as Minnesota State won 5-0 at Southwest Minnesota State... Maggie Saras (Boise, ID) scored twice for Regis in their 4-0 win at Adams State.
DIII - Alli Rigby (Rexburg, ID) scored the equalizer in the 84th minute for a 2-1 OT win for Southern Virginia versus Randolph... Zoe Boleneus (Spokane, WA) made five saves in a 1-0 shutout win for Saint Mary's at UW-River Falls.
NAIA - Riley Martinson (Spokane, WA) scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win versus Humboldt State for Embry-Riddle AU and the opening goal and assist in an 8-0 blowout at Simpson in their league opener.
