College Notebook 9.17.18


The opening week of league play for area conferences continued over the weekend. Central Washington posted a big win at MSUB as the GNAC opened play on Saturday and in the Northwest Conference the Whitworth sides both went unbeaten with a 3-0-1 record on the road.

Great Northwest Athletic Conference 


Saturday - Central Washington 4-0 MSU Billings :: Madison Bradley converted a penalty in the sixth minute and Lexsi Manning beat a defender to double the lead int he 40th. A long ball from Chelsea Marozik (Richland, WA / Walla Walla CC) allowed Mackinzie Packwood (Clarkston, WA) to quickly finish a third before the break in the 43rd. Bradley would set up Paige Devine for the final goal in the 80th and Emily Thomson made five saves for the shutout as the Wildcats were outshot in the contest.

Saturday - Saint Martin's 1-6 Northwest Nazarene :: The Nighthawks sent a message in the opening contest of the GNAC after giving up the initial goal seven minutes in. Rikki Myers tied it up quickly just three minutes later via Madi Taylor (Lewiston, ID / Treasure Valley CC) and then scored the go-ahead goal in teh 34th. Tennyson Young (Meridian, ID) nodded in a corner less than two minutes before halftime. In the second half Maddy Parton (Leavenworth, WA) finished off a two-on-one break with Myers in the 50th and Taylor easily finished a breakaway of her own three minutes later. Ashley Parton (Leavenworth, WA) would also get on the board with a penalty in the 66th.

Saturday - Western Washington 0-1 Concordia :: McKenna Stocker (Spokane, WA), Aspen Jeter (Bend, OR) and Kasey Ames (Spokane, WA) started and helped lead the Cavaliers to a historic victory over the ninth-ranked Vikings, ending their four-year unbeaten streak in conference play.

Northwest Conference 

Saturday - Whitworth 1-0 Pacific Lutheran :: Hannah Rae Miller scored the game-winner in the 70th minute as the defense limited the hosts to just two shots on goal for Molly Webster to save.

Saturday - Whitman 1-2 Puget Sound :: Sofia Ellington (Bend, OR) scored the opening goal midway through the first half for the Blues on a penalty kick and it looked like they were headed toward a win when the hosts scored the equalizer with five minutes left. The Loggers then grabbed the win three minutes later with Lura Morton (Moscow, ID) putting away a cross.

Sunday - Whitworth 1-1 Puget Sound :: Less than a minute after the Loggers got on the board a second chance opportunity on a corner saw Jadyn Baumgartner connect with Brixiada Mendoza, who unleashed a curling effort for the equalizer. Molly Webster made 10 saves in goal for the Pirates in the draw.

Sunday - Whitman 0-3 Pacific Lutheran :: The Lutes tallied their opener in the 36th minute and added a pair of goals in the second half to secure the win.

Cascade Conference 

Saturday - Rocky Mountain 0-0 Oregon Tech :: The two sides battled to the scoreless stalemate with Maia Wetzel (Helena, MT) making four saves to keep the hosts off the board.

Saturday - Northwest 1-2 (OT) Corban :: Trailing since a 15th minute Warriors goal, Sharaya Roberts (Spokane, WA) converted a penalty for the Eagles in the 86th minute to send the match to overtime. The hosts, though, found the winner in the eighth minute of extra time when Lexi McQueary (Kennewick, WA) sent a long cross to the back post that was put away for the win.

Sunday - College of Idaho 0-1 Southern Oregon :: Eight saves from Shae Waters kept the contest close, but a goal just 100 seconds into the match decided the outcome as the Yotes were unable to find an equalizer over the next 88 minutes.

Sunday - Eastern Oregon 3-3 Carroll :: In a wild game with two major swings, the Saints got a pair of clutch goals from Talya Vaira (Great Falls, MT) in the final 76 seconds of regulation to earn the draw. She scored the first off a rebound from a penalty that was saves and the second was a chip over the keeper from about 30 yards with 36 seconds left. Ironically, the Saints opened the scoring 70 seconds into the match when Kirsten Girolami put away a through ball that had deflected off a defender. Taylor Boyer found Abri Cardenas for the equalizer just seven minutes after the Saints had taken the lead, and then scored with a shot that deflected into the right side of the goal in the 18th minute for the lead. The Mountaineers made it a two goal advantage with Morgan Farrington (Meridian, ID) scoring in the 34th.

Around the Region 

Idaho State 0-3 Boise State :: The Broncos finished a sweep of UI and ISU with a convincing win over the Bengals Sunday. Raimee Sherle (Meridian, ID) scored the opener six minutes in on a through ball and Ashleigh Harrison made it two on a ball from Allegra Weeks (Boise, ID) with just over three minutes remaining before the break. McKenna Kynett capped the scoring in the 78th. Tara Fisher only needed to make two saves for the shutout.


Cal Poly 1-4 Washington State :: The Cougars rolled to the win on a trio of goals in the first half, two coming in the opening seven minutes. Brianna Alger tallied two-and-a-half minutes into the match and a through ball was put away by Morgan Weaver in the seventh. Another through ball led to Alysha Overland scoring the third goal in the 37th for the Cougs. Weaver netted a second goal to cap the game, finishing off a free kick from Maddy Haro in the 64th.

Gonzaga 0-0 Air Force :: Despite outshooting the hosts 9-1 in the first half and 13-9 for the contest, the Zags had to settle for the draw as the keeper for Air Force made nine saves to keep them off the board. In contrast Isabel Jones only needed to make one stop for the Bulldogs.

Idaho 0-2 Oregon :: The Ducks got a pair of goals in the first half from Marissa Everett to earn the victory as they outshot the Vandals 21-1 in the contest.

Around the Nation

Santa Clara 1-1 Stanford :: Kelcie Hedge (Post Falls, ID), Kelsey Turnbow (Spokane, WA) and Maria Sanchez (American Falls, ID) started and helped lead the seventh-ranked Broncos to the draw on the road against the nation's number one ranked side.

Portland 3-0 Oregon State :: Larkin Russell (Spokane, WA) helped set up the final goal for the Pilots in the road win.

Black Hills State 1-5 Adams State :: Natalie Wheelock (Coeur d'Alene, ID) put the Grizzlies back in front in the 62nd minute Sunday with a header that held as the game-winning goal.

Hamline 0-2 Carleton College :: Ruby Kazemi (Missoula, MT) scored the opening goal for the Knights in the ninth minute and then set up the second in the 34th.

Mary 1-0 MSU Moorhead :: Caylin Cathey (Billings, MT) scored the winning tally in the 68th minute on a ball from Megan Lowery (Hayden, ID / North Idaho College) to give the Marauders the road win.

Sunday - Whitworth 2-1 Pacific :: Drew Wilson made a fantastic play for the opener in the 36th minute to put the Pirates in front, driving past a defender with the ball and firing home from about 25 yards. Three minutes later a ball from Azzam Azzam hit Tyler Pangia for what proved to be the game-winner.


Sunday - Whitman 2-0 George Fox :: Jimmy Jacobson connected with Erik Nielsen just 54 seconds into the contest to give the Blues the lead and CJ Fritz (Bend, OD) finished off a corner served in from Oscar Harding in the 32nd. Owen Davis-Bower made four saves for the clean sheet.

Saturday - Willamette 3-1 Pacific Lutheran :: Joe Sammartino (Boise, ID) scored the opening goal of the match nine minutes in with the hosts rallying to the lead over the next 13 minutes.

Saturday - Linfield 3-4 Puget Sound :: Trailing 2-1 in the first half Gerardo Perez (Kuna, ID) scored to even the match up at the time.

Cascade Conference 

Saturday - Rocky Mountain 1-0 Oregon Tech :: Mason Luse (Billings, MT) broke the stalemate in the 63rd minute on an assist from Milo Downey and Kristofer Wennin made two saves in an extremely tight contest that saw five combined shots on target.

Sunday - College of Idaho 0-1 Southern Oregon :: Parker Billings (Boise, ID) made three saves in a shutout first half and Zach Dean (Meridian, ID) made five more stops in the second half as the Yotes were outshot 19-3 in the game, but a penalty in the 49th was the deciding moment.

Sunday - Walla Walla 0-8 Providence :: The blowout was on pretty quick with four goals in the opening 20 minutes. George Holloway scored the first and set up the second from Adrian Gomez, who also netted the fourth goal and tallied a second half assist. Holloway went on to add another goal and assist in the second half. Fernando Gutierrez scored the third with a header off a corner. Gudmundur Gudmundsson set up four goals in the contest. Also getting on the board in the second half was Paulo Leonardo, Ole Cloppenburg and Carlos Heredia. Marc Girones was actually called upon to make a pair of saves in the shutout.

Sunday - Eastern Oregon 4-0 Carroll :: Connor Young nodded in a cross four minutes into the contest for the lead and Michael Ebel (LaGrande, OR) put away another cross in the 23rd to make it two. Christian Miramontes (LaGrande, OR) blasted a close-range effort home in the 55th before Young added a second tally off an Oscar Munoz cross in the 75th. Aidan Wright made nine saves in the Mountaineers' shutout before giving way to his backup in the 79th minute.

Around the Region

MSU Billings 1-0 Mary :: The Yellowjackets grabbed the win over the hosts when Guillaume Kremer fed Dana Kowachek (Missoula, MT) for the winner in the 23rd minute. Freshman Dalton Mauzay (Cheney, WA) made three saves for the shutout in his debut.


Northwest Nazarene 2-3 Point Loma :: Jake Levine (Spokane, WA) scored off a free kick from Sam Ho to even things up in the 19th minute and two minutes later Skyler Munroe (Boise, ID) finished off a lengthy cross from Danny Cuevas (Caldwell, ID). The hosts, though, tied it back up in the second half with a penalty and then snatched the win in overtime.

Gonzaga 0-2 Southern Methodist :: The Zags were outshot 21-5 in the contest, but kept the contest in a stalemate through the first half with Ben Willis stopping five shots. The hosts would finally get on the board in the 69th and add a second in the 88th.

Westminster 7-0 Colorado Christian :: Alec Marshall (Bozeman, MT) scored the final goal of the contest for the Griffins.
