College Notebook 9.22.18: WSU, Boise State & Idaho Open League Play with Wins

Sacramento State v Eastern Washington Gallery [+]
It was a busy Friday around the region with quite a few teams opening up league play in the Big Sky, Mountain West and Pac-12 Conferences. Most came away with quite the celebrations with #14 Washington State topping the Bruins at UCLA, Boise State getting a brace from McKenna Kynett and Idaho enjoying a Bridget Daley hat-trick. Here's a recap of Friday's action...

## Women's Scores & Notes ##

Big Sky Conference

Sacramento State 1-0 Eastern Washington :: The two sides exchanged a few good chances in a game full of physical midfield play. The Hornets had one chance go off the woodwork while Eastern's best look in the match was a long shot headed upper corner that Kaylyn Evans sprawled to somehow stop. The match seemed destined, at the least, for overtime before Caitlin Prothe (Spokane, WA) launched a dangerous ball from midfield. The initial shot from Bonnie Ford was stopped, but Skylar Littlefield was there to knock in the rebound with less than three minutes remaining. It was Eastern's first loss to the Hornets since 2011.

Northern Arizona 3-2 Idaho State :: Makena Bambei chipped a cross from Jenna Parkhurst into the goal just 75 seconds into the contest to give the Bengals the lead, but NAU answered in the 11th to even things up. Bambei tallied again in the 37th only to see the Lumberjacks tie it back up again in the 49th and eventually get the winner in the 84th.

Portland State 0-4 Idaho :: Friday night was the Bridget Daley show in the dome as the senior registered her first points of the year in dramatic fashion. She scored the first 13 minutes in and added to it with the first two goals in the second half to give the Vandals first control by three goals in the 63rd minute. Claire Johnson was credited with assists on the first and third goals. Myah Merino would tack one on just a minute after the hat-trick celebration, and Makayla Presgrave (Saint Maries, ID) would finish with three saves for the shutout.

Southern Utah 2-5 Weber State :: Haley Thomas (Kennewick, WA) set up the equalizer for the Wildcats in the 35th and later Sadie Newsom (Richland, WA) pushed the lead to three goals in the 58th. After the second SUU goal Newsom tallied again in the 76th.

Pac-12 Conference

Washington State 1-0 UCLA :: The Cougars knocked off the eighth ranked Bruins despite being outshot 19-6 in the contest thanks to Morgan Weaver making a long run through the defense after Aaqila McLyn had stopped the Bruin attack in the 61st minute. Rachel Thompson made nine saves for the shutout.

Cascade Collegiate Conference

Carroll 2-0 Corban :: Kirsten Girolami scored 15 minutes into the contest to give the Saints the lead on the road and Lizzie Sheldon poked home a ball from Brynn Walker (Helena, MT) just over two minutes before halftime to push the lead to two. Significantly outshot by the Warriors 22-6, the Saints did well to limit the chances to just four on goal that Devan Murfitt (Bozeman, MT) stopped for the clean sheet.

Southern Oregon 0-2 Eastern Oregon :: Taylor Boyer broke a stalemate in the 67th minute off a ball from Jenna Jensen (Spokane, WA) and then six minutes later fed MacKinley Gregus for the second. Cydni Cottrell (Pasco, WA) made four saves for the shutout.

Providence 3-0 Northwest Christian :: Eme McLaughlin (Great Falls, MT) scored 11 minutes into the match to give the Argos the lead and Kate Sisler made it two in the 38th. McLaughlin capped the game with a second goal in the 89th minute and Dakota Neumann made six saves.

Multnomah 0-9 Northwest University :: Whitney Weaver (Spokane, WA) scored two of the first three goals with Katie Michkiosky (Wenatchee, WA) setting up both and tallying the second of the trio. Stephanie Wilson (Kalispell, MT) set up teh first of two from Nadine Huff to wrap up the half in front by five. In the second half Rylee Rassier (Spokane, WA) scored the first before Michkiosky scored two more to complete a hat-trick. Sharaya Roberts (Spokane, WA) capped the game with the final goal.

Around the Region

Nevada 1-2 Boise State :: The Broncos opened Mountain West play with a victory thanks to the duo of Kristina Serres and McKenna Kynett. They tallied the lone goal of the first half midway through the period when Kynett finished off a Serres cross. The Wolfpack pulled even 84 seconds after the break, but another Serres cross restored the lead when Kynett knocked it home. It was just the third time in nine games Raimee Sherle had not scored.

Gonzaga 1-0 Seattle University :: In their final non-conference game the Bulldogs grabbed a late victory via Indian Jencks. Despite outshooting the hosts 19-6 in the match, it was a fast counter that led to the winner with Jencks putting away a rebound from a shot by Sophia Viviano. Isabel Jones made two saves in the shutout.

Around the Nation

Cal Poly 1-5 Santa Clara :: Maria Sanchez (American Falls, ID) started things off with a flurry setting up two goals and scoring one of her own. She fed Maddy Gonzalez for the opener two minutes in and then nodded in a cross on a play created by Kelsey Turnbow (Spokane, WA) in the seventh before finding Gonzalez again in the 13th.

Portland 1-0 North Dakota :: Playing in another non-league contest, the Pilots snagged the win on the road with a goal in the 68th minute set up by Larkin Russell (Spokane, WA).

## Men's Scores & Notes ##

Cascade Collegiate Conference

Carroll 0-4 Corban :: Despite being vastly outshot, the Saints did well to stymie the hosts, but a pair of quick one-minute scoring bursts were the difference. Corban's first two came back-to-back in in a 40 second span for a two goal lead in the 16th minute. The margin remained until the 88th minute when they nabbed two more in a 45-second span.

Southern Oregon 2-0 Eastern Oregon :: The match went to halftime scoreless, but it only took 27 seconds for that to change in the second half. The Raiders would add another in the 71st for some insurance.

Providence 1-0 Northwest Christian :: Luis Macias scored the deciding goal with a shot from close-range on a ball from Gudmundur Gudmundsson in the 51st minute and Marc Girones made two saves in the shutout.

Warner Pacific 1-2 Evergreen State :: Emilio Meraz-Rodriguez (Pasco, WA) delivered a cross for the opening score 15 minutes into the contest.
