NWAC East Tonight 9.12.18: Knights Upset Spokane Men to Earn Split


After watching the ladies hold off unbeaten Spokane in a 2-1 loss, the Wenatchee Valley men were able to earn an upset victory against the Bigfoot with a pair of goals late in the game despite being well outshot for the contest.

In the day's other big meeting Yakima Valley kept the loss column empty with a victory over North Idaho to move to 2-0-1 in advance of Saturday's meeting between two of the three unbeaten women's teams.

MEN


Spokane 0-2 Wenatchee Valley :: Despite outshooting the Knights 12-4 in the contest, the Bigfoot were locked in a stalemate with the hosts with the game going scoreless for well over an hour. Johan Espinoza (Wenatchee, WA), though, scored twice in just over a two-minute span with an unassisted tally in the 71st and a second set up by Omar Mendoza (Wenatchee, WA) and Romario Martinez (Yakima, WA) in the 73rd. Alexis Calderilla (Wenatchee, WA) made nine saves to earn the clean sheet.

Walla Walla 5-0 Treasure Valley :: Andres Arroyo (Pasco, WA) scored twice in the opening 13 minutes to give the Warriors control early on the road. Jose Peralta (Boardman, OR) made it three at the half-hour mark and in the second half Kevin Meraz-Rodriguez (Pasco, WA) set up Miguel Rodriguez (Milton-Freewater, OR) in the 75th and Luis Perez (Walla Walla, WA) with two minutes left. Alex Grimaldo finished the shutout with just two saves.

Blue Mountain 0-3 Columbia Basin :: Gonzolo Frausto (Sunnyside, WA) scored three minutes into the contest for the Hawks and then doubled the lead via Joel Valle (Pasco, WA) in the 33rd. Juan Cruz (Kennewick, WA) capped the scoring on an assist from Emilio Herrera (Prosser, WA) with 15 minutes left. Christopher Kirby (Yakima, WA) only needed to make two stops for the shutout.

Notes: Rafael Cuevas (Yakima, WA) scored the second goal for Skagit Valley in a 2-0 victory at Shoreline

WOMEN


Spokane 2-1 Wenatchee Valley :: Ali Smeltzer (Spokane, WA) put the Bigfoot on the board via Kalle Crouch (Spokane, WA) nine minutes into the match. Gaby Kennedy (Spokane, WA) scored in her third consecutive match in the 19th minute with what proved to be the game-winner. Despite Spokane dominating the contest Alysha Donovan (Quincy, WA) put one of the Knights' two shots past Micky Ramirez in the 30th minute. Trisha Priest (Omak, WA) would finish with 21 saves in the game for WVC as they managed to keep the Bigfoot from adding more to their tally.

North Idaho 1-3 Yakima Valley :: Brianna Beuck (Walla Walla, WA) found Harley Hendry (Hauser, ID) just over three minutes into the contest to give the Yaks the early lead. Courtney Handlen (Pocatello, ID) made the advantage two in the 32nd via Sessi Allott. An own goal on a corner made matters interesting in the second half as NIC moved back within one, but Handlen added a second goal with a chip over the keeper in the 78th to secure the victory for Yakima Valley.

Walla Walla 5-0 Treasure Valley :: Eight different players got in on the scoring for the Warriors on the day with goals from Haley Wammock (Yakima, WA), Klarissa Barajas (Kennewick, WA), Caitlin Crist, Jennifer Inions (Prosser, WA) and Sally Culig (Boise, ID), who also added an assist in the tally. Goalkeeper Danielle Dowd (Rathdrum, ID) had a light day with just one save needed for the shutout.

Blue Mountain 1-3 Columbia Basin :: Rebecca Wheeler scored all three goals for the Hawks as they dominated the Timberwolves to the tune of a 19-2 shots advantage. She scored back-to-back goals in the 21st and 24th minutes for the early lead and eight minutes after Kiana Corpuz put the visitors on the board in the 52nd she finished the hat-trick.

Notes: Grace Hipke (Richland, WA) set up one of Peninsula's dozen goals as they drubbed Everett 12-0.
