NWAC East Tonight 9.15.18: Bigfoot Women Win Battle of Unbeatens

Two of the top-rated sides in the NWAC squared off in Spokane Saturday evening and the contest finished in favor of the host Sasquatch on a day in which the home teams were successful across the board with the exception of the Wenatchee Valley men winning at North Idaho. Among the home teams performing well were the two Treasure Valley sides as they both posted surprising draws against the visiting Columbia Basin Hawks.

WOMEN

Columbia Basin 0-0 Treasure Valley :: The Hawks managed to come out of the contest with their unbeaten status intact, but the result was definitely a surprise against a Treasure Valley squad that came in without a point. Despite outshooting the Chukars by double digits, seven saves from Hannah Simpson (Star, ID) kept CBC off the board as they played to the stalemate. Kaile Kauanui only needed to make one stop for the Hawks.

Blue Mountain 1-7 Walla Walla :: The Warriors took care of business against the Timberwolves. Haley Wammock (Yakima, WA) found Madison Brownell (Selah, WA) two minutes in and connected with Ashley Conrad in the 13th. Klarissa Baraja (Kennewick, WA) scored the next two in the 31st and 36th for a four goal first half. Wammock set up a third via Taylen Wohl 10 minutes into the second half before Kiana Corpuz scored for Blue Mountain in the 61st. Demeree McLean (Meridian, ID) answered within a minute and then Caitlin Crist rounded out the scoring with a minute left.

Wenatchee Valley 0-7 North Idaho :: Five different scorers got on the scoresheet before Ellory Ferris (Ellensburg, WA) finished things of with a pair in the final half hour as the Knights continue to struggle. Autumn Stewart (Spokane, WA) scored 15 minutes in and Linnea Pretzer (Idaho Falls, ID) tallied five minutes later. Kaleigh Haworth struck in the 22nd via Ferris and then set up Melissa Decker (Meridian, ID) in the 38th. Sahkora George made it five before intermission. Kaysha Bailey (Lewiston, ID) only made one save in the shutout.

Yakima Valley 0-1 Spokane :: The pair went into the weekend showdown ranked in the top six in the coaches NWAC poll and the match lived up to it with neither side really allowing the other many dangerous opportunities on goal. With 20 minutes remaining Sierra Everman (Spokane, WA) was fouled from behind at the edge of the six as she was following up a rebound, giving Gaby Kennedy (Spokane, WA) the opportunity to convert what held as the winner from the spot. Micky Ramirez only needed to make one save in the match for the shutout.

Standings:  Spokane 4-0-0... Walla Walla 3-1-0... North Idaho 3-1-0... Columbia Basin 2-0-2... Yakima Valley 2-1-1... Treasure Valley 0-3-1... Blue Mountain 0-4-0... Wenatchee Valley 0-4-0

MEN

Columbia Basin 1-1 Treasure Valley :: Arbey Guerrero (Ephrata, WA) scored seven minutes into the contest via Joel Valle (Pasco, WA) to give the Hawks the lead on the road against the winless Chukars, but that was all they could muster in a tight contest. The hosts evened matters up with Juan Perez (Buhl, ID) converting a penalty two minutes into the second half and kept the Hawks at bay, particularly after Brian Licona (Sunnyside, WA) was sent off for CBC with 18 minutes remaining.

Blue Mountain 1-2 Walla Walla :: The Timberwolves nearly picked up their first point, but Edwin Romero (Walla Walla, WA) gave the Warriors the victory on a ball from Hector Pena (Nampa, ID) with a minute left in the contest. Andres Arroyo (Pasco, WA) originally gave the hosts the advantage 20 minutes into the game with Blue Mountain equalizing through an own goal in the 33rd.

Wenatchee Valley 3-0 North Idaho :: The Knights were the lone team to register a win away from home on the day, handing the Cardinals their first loss of the season. Both keepers were busy on the day and things were going well for both Ulysses Gonzalez (Mattawa, WA) and Luis Hernandez (Nampa, ID) in the first half with the contest going to the break scoreless. Gonzalez would finish with five saves for the shutout while his teammates put three on the board in the second half. Johan Espinoza (Wenatchee, WA) broke the deadlock in the 52nd and tallied a second in the 75th. Kevin Melendez finished the scoring in the 86th.

Standings: Walla Walla 3-0-0... Columbia Basin 2-0-1... Wenatchee Valley 2-2-0... Spokane 2-1-0... North Idaho 1-1-1... Treasure Valley 0-2-2... Blue Mountain 0-4-0
